To counter the media ‘circus’ that made this tragic event more painful for her loved ones, her family did see the merit in addressing media attention that focused on a positive message about Jo’s life, and helped raise awareness and/or funds for the remembrance garden. The publicity listed did this.

An integrated concept for new buildings and landscape that included a proposed participatory art event (conceived by Brodie McAllister) that linked to the town’s ice boat fishing history: a large block of ice (containing a mock up of one of the original boats) would be dragged from the river and dropped into and encapsulated within a cavity in the new square, the meting ice fully revealing the artefact.

In the joy of a spring filled grove

light filled water bursts from the ground

a ripple weaves down through the olives

In the summer warmth

excitedly, I follow

slowing, I hesitate

at the head of a well

straining to see down, I despair

I hear the echo of falling water

It gives me hope

that pushes me on

to find the parent block

brooding in a marsh

In the autumn glow of a maple

reaching out for reassurance

I am soothed by the warm trickle

forced from deep inside

turning, I watch

the flow passing into dark woods

curiosity draws me closer
